KÖSEM tHE FOUNDER OF BVH
Kosem Mahpeyker Sultan (1590-1651)
The most convincing story on the life of Kösem Sultan is that she was born to a Greek priest from the island of Tinos and was kidnapped by pirates to be traded in a slave market. When she came to the Ottoman palace, she was named Mahpeyker. Later she earned the title “Kösem”; meaning “the leader sheep, followed by others”. She must have drawn attention to herself with her readiness of speech and diversity of talents.
